In addition to email and instant messaging, blogging has become one of the prevailing phenomena among web users on the Internet. In their essence, blogs serve as the personal online space that the World Wide Web has provided since its early days, but by simplifying the process of creating and maintaining such space, they have attracted an unprecedented number of participants. This created an excitement of self-sustaining growth; not everyone was using simple tools (Blogger, LiveJournal, etc.), but as these tools fueled the movement, it quickly took off and expanded in many directions and at all levels of expertise and sophistication. Blogs are the information medium for the masses and by looking at the numbers, it is obvious that they are being widelymassively being used and read. Whether or not they will ever assume roles similar to those established by the mass(ive) media remains to be seen.
