Solution: Pre-K to K

Learning Objectives:
The main goal of our curriculum at these early stages is to introduce young children to interaction with computers (e.g., keyboarding) and to the use of educational software. To this end, we propose using software such as GCompris, Knowledge Adventure's Math Blaster series, The Learning Company's Reader Rabbit series, and Disney Interactive learning titles based on characters such as Winnie-the-Pooh, Aladdin, The Jungle Book and Mickey Mouse (characters that children want to spend time with and can relate to).

To create a portable curriculum we suggest software programs that are available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows, preferably available in multiple languages. All the material at this stage will be geared toward learning how to use a computer by using themed software to maintain the interest of young children. Once the children are comfortable using a keyboard and mouse to interact with a computer, software packages will be used to teach simple games (memory, Connect Four), math, reading, geography, science, and basic puzzle/problem-solving skills.

Alignment with existing criteria:
Software exercises will be chosen to align with the accompanying curricula for other school subjects. At this level, there exist several appropriate and indeed effective options to accomplish this task; most of the existing educational software that has been created for children in Pre-K and Kindergarten involves reading, simple math, and learning about shapes, animals, and real-world objects, as needed.
