World International Property Organization (WIPO)

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO - www.wipo.org) is an agency of the United Nations headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. WIPO acts as a global body responsible for protecting intellectual property through the cooperation of its member states. In August, 1998, those member states numbered 170.

In 1998, WIPO began issuing a series of RFC's (Request For Comments) on intellectual property issues associated with Internet domain names, including dispute resolution. These recommendations will be provided to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the new organization that has been formed to manage and coordinate the Internet domain name system.
