Finally Hacked!
Not too long after the release of the Xbox, Andrew “bunnie” Huang, an MIT EE PHD student at the time, received an Xbox as a gift from his girlfriend. He was writing a thesis on supercomputer architecture at the time and started poking around with the Xbox’s security system. With little help from others, he pretty much found and exploited a flaw in the Xbox’s security system single handedly and found the software keys needed to run backup discs. He made most of his findings public on his website, and although he didn’t share the key (because Microsoft considered it copyrighted material that would be illegal to distribute), he made enough information public so others could. Here are bunnie’s findings. Shortly after, everything started: the Xbox community’s numbers went to the ceiling. No, they sky-rocketed.
