What About Color?

Although the algorithm outlined above assumed an image with only one color component, specifically a gray-scale image, images with multiple color components are compressed following the same algorithm. Color images are generally composed of three components, such as the red, blue, and green of RBG. In these cases, JPEG treats the image as though it were three separate images, each of a different color component, and each image would be compressed separately.
