
Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)
The ARWU was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Since then, it has been updated on an annual basis. The six objective indicators it uses to rank world universities is as follows:
- 1) The number of alumni awarded with Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
- 2) The number of staff awarded with Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
- 3) The number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific
- 4) The number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science
- 5) The number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index
- 6) Per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution
