Conclusion
The growing trend of using the Internet as a tool for political discourse is
generally a positive one. The Internet allows for a closer relationship
between candidates and their constituencies as well as providing more
helpful information to voters. In general, the Internet enables citizens to
be more active in politics. At the same time, these benefits must be
weighed against several negative effects, including the dubious intentions
of 527 organizations, the digital divide, and the questionable credibility
of online information. However, with the help of closer regulation, the
passage of time, and an increasingly Internet-savvy populace, many of these
negative effects will be mitigated. Hopefully, the Internet will continue
to grow as a medium for valuable political discourse and activism.
