"Survey of Software at Work - Winter 1992"
By Alan Cane
Main Issues
- Rights of consumers to expect quality programs
- Difficulty of progamming making catching all bugs impractical
- Methods used to encourage quality software development
Abstract
Millions of dollars a year are lost as the result of software failures, both large and small. However, programming is not easy, and it is extremely difficult to prove larger programs correct logically and mathematically. The following article discusses these issues, mentioning that users have the right to expect that their programs were tested thoroughly and hence will be of high quality. To better insure this is the case, the article discusses methods and contests that governments and companies are sponsoring to try to get software developers to produce high quality programs.
