Sonal Gupta
I am a final year PhD student in Computer Science at Stanford University. I work with Christopher D. Manning in the Stanford Natural Language Processing (NLP) group and closely collaborate with the Interactive Data Lab under Jeffrey Heer.

My research interests are building natural language processing and data analysis systems using machine learning tools. Recently, my work has focused on practical and interpretable information extraction systems (such as extracting entities and relations from text) that use only a few examples (or prototypes) as supervision.

I have collaborated with Diana MacLean, Sanjay Kairam, and Jason Chuang on data analysis of medical forums, building effective automated and manual text annotation tools, and evaluation of topic models, respectively. For my Master's thesis at UT Austin, I worked on combining NLP and computer vision with Ray Mooney and Kristen Grauman.

I contribute to the Stanford CoreNLP software frequently. The following software are geared towards extracting entities from text with little supervision (Github link).

In the graduate school, I have taken following relevant courses:
(Social and Information) Network Analysis; Probabilistic Graphical Models; Convex Optimization; Machine Learning; Computer Vision; Visual Recognition and Search; Natural Language Processing; Numerical Linear Algebra; Modern Statistical Methods; Introduction to Math Logic
I paint when I have time (that is, almost never these days). I like traveling, outdoors, and learning new cuisines. Thanks to the Bay area weather and awesomeness, I have started loving hiking, biking, and swimming. My best vacation would be cooking exotic food on top of a mountain in middle of nowhere. I also volunteer at Asha for Education, Stanford (organizer of Asha Holi) -- check out the projects we support from the funds we raise.
