The following are the values I believe are most important to great company cultures that allow talented people to do great work (at least the kind of companies I'd want to work at!). I don't think these ideas are particularly novel, but it can still be helpful to be reminded of things of which one is already aware.
I will separately note that any description of a company's culture should be reflective and reinforcing rather than aspirational — if the culture described does not reflect the actions of the people who comprise it, the statements lose their meaning.
Everyone should know what their top priority is and be empowered to cut out distractions and detours from those goals.
This also means it is everyone's obligation to share critical opinions and feedback, and to contribute to an environment where that is easy to do.
Decisions and actions are made by specific people. Requirements come from specific people. Sometimes, we are socialized to use language that's more passive or collective, but without a person you can talk to, any further clarification or remedy is cut off. You should always be able to name the person responsible for a decision, requirement, or action.
If you aren't the one who feels the pain of the decisions you make, you don't receive gradients for improvement, and you become disconnected from what you are responsible for (thereby increasing the likelihood of making poor decisions).
It's a common pitfall to simply accept that things need to be a certain way without adequate justification. Also if something seems obviously silly, don't do it! Question it, delete it, or find a better way.
Unless well-justified by outsized consequences, default to just getting started doing things and learning from trying.
A small group of high-performing people can move much faster and do much more than most imagine. Growing too fast adds overhead, bureaucracy, and risks lowering the talent bar. People and teams should be able to try things and experiment own their own without requiring external resources.
Talk to people directly; speak and act in a way that truly represents you; be kind and decent.
