Omnivore FAQ

I get a number of emails asking about the Omnivore paper so I have started compiling a FAQ:

Q: What OS is easiest to install Omnivore?

When Omnivore was being developed (2015) I was using Ubuntu 14.04. Since the dependencies of Omnivore and Caffe Con Troll are the same as for Berkeley's Caffe, it may be easiest to run Omnivore on Ubuntu 14.04 and to follow Caffe's Ubuntu 14.04 installation instructions for dependencies.

Q: What is the easiest way to set up the cluster environment on EC2?

We used StarCluster with an NFS, and Omnivore was run from the master node using a machine list file like this.

Q: What are the absolute numbers for Figure 11?

See Figure 15 in the Appendix for more information on Figure 11. "1.00x" in Figure 15 corresponds to 107.049 seconds for 40 iterations (10-49 out of 50), or 2.67s per iteration (forwards/backwards of one mini-batch). All single-node data can be seen here.
