Welcome to the Nick Parlante book review list. The list grew from a handout I made for my Stanford students in the Computer Science department who wanted to know about good books related to the classes I teach. The list is a natural result of my constant reading and basically opinionated personality. It started as a pure CS effort, but my favorite books from all genres crept in over time.
The list is an unscientific collection of my thoughts on the books which I happen to have read and liked. I have several sources of books, all somewhat random. First, publishers send me books, so I tend to see a lot of books related to classes I teach. Second, I live near Kepler's books in Menlo Park, and whenever I have too much work to do, I instead wander down to Kepler's and buy up any good looking new books in their computer section. So I tend to see a lot of whatever the Kepler's buyers seem to think is good. Finally, I read things my friends recommend which generally fall in the literary category of "nerdesque". The list got its big boost into WWW existence one day when I was sick and coughing constantly. Turned out to be a good day to stay away from other people, cozy up with the computer, and get this all typed in.
All of the books in this list are good. However, if a CS area book is not in the list, that doesn't really tell you anything one way or the other. I try to update the list periodically. The most recent major revision was in January of 1996. I added the Internet section in April of 1996.
This is the most quickly changing section. There are too many Internet books and they come out and become out-dated too soon for me to ever feel like I'm up-to-date. So in this list, I'm just trying to describe the best books I've seen on Internet related topics. I'm adding books to this list for CS193i.
Ok, there's a lot of forgettable science fiction. God knows, I've read and forgotten tons. But some of it's pretty good.
