Recreational Use of Technology
Increased use of e-mail and the Internet has led many to use this technology as a form of recreation. E-mail, electronic bulletin boards, and the Internet combine to form virtual communities, those which exist only through technology. Increased use of this technology has led many to use it for recreation, with chat room allowing interaction amongst those with similar interests without the problem of geography. They make it easy for any participant to communicate with a broad range of individuals without leaving the comfort of their own home. However, these communities have their drawbacks. As more people turn to their computers for recreation, people have less of a connection with the life of their geographic community. Virtual communities allow participants a broader scope of personalities to encounter, but actual human interaction suffers as a result.
