Anonymous Remailers

Those wishing to send anonymous messages can use an "anonymous remailer." The most famous of these was known as 'anon.penet.fi' - operated in Finland over the course of several years it provided anymous email: users would send an email to anon.penet.fi along with the recipient's real address. The server would strip out any identifying information and create a new mail message that it would send directly. Additionally, it would create a temporary ID for the sender, like 1238123. The recipient would receive a message from the address anon-1238123@anon.penet.fi - if they replied, the response would go to anon.penet.fi, which would then look up the original sender's email address and send the response directly to that user. Unfortunately, the server was shut down in mid-1996 due to legal pressure; illegal anonymous messages would have forced the machine to reveal its user records (who had sent which messages at what times), which would have obviated the point of the system (to provide anonymous email). There was in addition a very large load of spam being sent through the remailer that was difficult for the poor administrator to filter out.
