History

The Creation of the NFC Forum and its Vision

The NFC Forum was created in 2004 by Sony, NXP Semiconductors, and Nokia. It is a consortium which works to define standards on top of the ISO standards to ensure maximum compatibility across all implementations of NFC technology.

The NFC Forum mission statement is as follows:

The Near Field Communication Forum was formed to advance the use of Near Field Communication technology by developing specifications, ensuring interoperability among devices and services, and educating the market about NFC technology.

Formed in 2004, the Forum now has 140 members. Manufacturers, applications developers, financial services institutions, and more all work together to promote the use of NFC technology in consumer electronics, mobile devices, and PCs.

Members of this forum include American Express, AT&T, Google, Intel, LG, Motorola, Qualcomm, RIM, Sony Ericsson, and Texas Instruments.
