With dance and sports, there are two forms of ownership: creation of the movement and execution of the movement. A coreographer might create the motion and then show it to dancers who will actually execute the move on stage. A coach may come up with a strategy for a player who will go into the field and use it. Or a player may practice and come up with their own moves. Basketball is one sport where individual players often come up with their own movement styles and strategies. There is no official copyright placed on the motion, but there is an unwritten understanding that someone created the move and someone else might just be using it even though they did not come up with it themselves.
