Fault-tolerant computing spans a wide variety of subjects and methods, some that focus on hardware, others that deal with software, but more often than not address both. In the continuing pursuit for more reliable systems, the distinction between different solutions blur and although we have aimed to separate some of the main areas of research into different sections, inevitably some of the same concepts come up over and over again. Nevertheless, the topics addressed below should give a broad overview of the fascinating arena of fault-tolerant computing.
