According to Chris Forman of Ars Technica, Near Field communication's standardization "grew out of work by Sony and Phillips to make their standards interoperable while extending the general capabilities of the set-up-free two-way communication offered by those standards."

In 2003, NFC became an acceptable standard for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

In 2004, NFC became an accepted Information Communication Technology and Consumer Electronics (ECMA) standard.

In this same year, Sony, NXP Semiconductors, and Nokia created the NFC Forum
