Information Gathering

Serious privacy concerns have been raised over the potential use of social networks to gather vast quantities of personal information about individuals. We investigate these concerns, considering the following:

  1. The threat of malicious insiders with access to social network databases
  2. The danger of data leaks and vulnerability to hackers
  3. The potential use and misuse of social networks by employers, university authorities, law enforcers, and even tax auditors to dig up personal information

Are these legitimate concerns? Are social networking services behaving ethically with respect to the vast amount of personal data stored on their servers? Are employers and other authorities behaving ethically when they use social networks to gather information on students and employees?
