In collaboration with several of its community partners ,
including many of the local elementary schools, Plugged In
has developed a successful after-school program for community
kids. Six days a week, children under the age of 12 are
brought to Plugged In's children center to participate
in various activities designed to teach them basic
computing and learning skills. These activities include
learning games and hands-on projects, such as arts and
crafts. In addition, specially-designed curricula
has been developed which incorporate the learning games
with a specific skill set or experience.
One such curriculum is entitled
"Symbolism and Microsoft Word." Children
from the Shule Mandela Academy and those involved
with Mothers on a "Mission to Save Our Children
(MOMZ) are brought in for 1-3 hours a week over a
period of 10 weeks to participate in this activity.
The curriculum is designed to teach communication
skills through a multimedia project; particular
attention is paid to developing basic word processing
skills. Towards the end of the project, the children
are introduced to the Internet by teaching them how to
put their finished work on the World Wide Web.
Additional curriculum specifically geared towards teaching
basic and more advanced computer skills have also been
developed. For example, the advanced computers class is
designed to introduce the children computer peripherals,
Pagemaker and web page layout, and the concept of
using multiple programs for one task. This is done under
the auspice of creating a computer business.
