Each node is a blog or section of the New York Times. The size of a node indicates how many commenters it has; the color of a node indicates how male-dominated its comments are (red being mostly female, blue being mostly male). Two forums are connected if they share readership*.
- Give the nodes a few seconds to settle, then check out the clusters!
- Mouse over nodes to get more information. Click on a node to toggle between showing recommendations and showing commenter gender.
- Female commenters are rare but get more recommendations.
- Females get more recommendations on more male-dominated forums, and men get more recommendations on more female-dominated forums.
*The correlation matrix of the commenter-forum matrix was computed as described in the paper and forums were clustered using spectral clustering. Thus, forums tended to be clustered together if they had many commenters in common. In the visualization, two forums are connected if they are in the same cluster and have correlation > .1, or if they are in different clusters and have correlation > .3.
