Intel vs AMD: Different Strategies
Intel and AMD are the giants of the processor industry. Together, they account for 98.8% of the market of x86 processors. The two companies, however, have long held vastly different views on the practicality of 64-bit computing.
AMD has long believed that the mainstream computing industry is on the cusp of a 64 bit revolution, and since the release of the first Athlon 64 in September 2003, AMD has been committed to future-proofing their processors to support this technology. Intel, on the other hand, has been very slow in adopting 64 bit computing in a standard desktop environment.
