As the Course Advisor, I'm available to chat about courses, the department, program planning, etc. I'm a master's student who was an undergraduate CS major here as well and have taken almost all of the undergraduate CS courses. If you are a current Stanford student, pretty much anything you want to talk about, you can ask me and if I'm not the right person, I'll try to at least point you in the right direction. My office hours are on a walk-in basis, so you do not need an appointment - just come on by. If you are applying to Stanford or considering application, you can also contact me regarding information about the program. However, please check out the High School FAQ first.
A little more of a bio: I am a fifth-year coterm specializing in HCI. I love computer
machines. In fact, every so often I like to pretend that I am a computer
machine. Last summer I interned at Google as a software
engineer on the Google Alerts team. The summer before that I interned at
Palm as a developer on the browser team. In the past I have researched virtual
human interpersonal touch with the Virtual Human Interaction Lab here at
Stanford and psycholinguistics at University of Pennsylvania's Institute for
Research in Cognitive Science. I spent the spring of my junior year abroad
in Barcelona studying art and architecture and listening to beautiful house music.
If you'd like to talk about CS courses, the major, coterming, internships, research,
the feasibility of going abroad, or some song or band that you really think I
should hear feel free to shoot me an email.
Claire Stager
Office: Gates 182 (Mon - Fri 8-5)
Email: stager@cs
Phone: 723-6094
Claire Stager is our Program Administrator. She handles all of the paperwork in the department as well as any administrative
problems you might have. She also basically knows everything (read about Claire winning the Amy Blue Award here). If you have anything that requires a signature, you probably need to see Claire. Claire also approves your Program Sheet for graduation, so when you have one filled out, you should bring it to her so she can approve it and keep it on file. In general, if you have questions about the program requirements, etc. you should ask the Course Advisor. If she can't help you, she'll probably direct you to Claire.
Your Faculty Advisor (if you are declared)
When you declare, you must choose a faculty member in the CS department to be your faculty advisor. Many advising groups get together a few times a year to have lunch or dinner together and discuss what's going on in everyone's life. However, you should realize that it is important to be proactive in your relationship with your faculty advisor. Most advisors (and students) are exremely busy, but they do want to see you succeed. Make the time to stop by your advisor's office hours and the lunch/dinner events and build a relationship with him/her. The perspective of someone significantly older and experienced in the field can be invaluable. Each advising group also has a website which lists the members of the group as well as anything else the group has put together. The list of faculty with links to their advising group websites is available here. If you are undeclared and looking for a faculty advsior, take a look at our Choosing an Advisor page.
